The obvious one
Beef fat. On my lips. Really?
Really. Tallow was the base of skin care for most of human history and only got replaced when petroleum turned out to be cheaper to produce at scale. Its fatty acid profile is unusually close to the oil your own skin makes, which is why it absorbs instead of sitting on the surface.
Does it smell or taste like beef?
No. Properly rendered and filtered tallow is close to odorless and tasteless. If a tallow product smells like a kitchen, it was rendered badly or not filtered enough.
Is it vegan or vegetarian?
No, and there is no way to make it so. Tallow is the product. If you are looking for a plant-based balm we are not the brand, and we would rather tell you that here than after you have paid.
The formula
Why only two ingredients?
Because we could not find a third that made it work better. Every other ingredient in a conventional balm is there for shelf life, cost, flavor, or color. None of those help your lips.
Why is the flagship unscented, and why no SPF?
Synthetic flavor oils make you lick your lips, which dries them out, so a flavored stick quietly sells you the problem along with the cure. Grapefruit, vanilla and mint are coming as single essential oils, three ingredients instead of two, and the label will say three rather than pretending otherwise. SPF would require active filters and the stabilizers that go with them, which is a different product.
Where does the tallow come from?
Suet from grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle, rendered and filtered before it goes anywhere near a tube. Batch number and pour date are printed on every label.
Are there preservatives? How long does it last?
None, and it does not need them. Tallow and beeswax contain no water, and bacteria need water. Kept out of direct sun, a tube is good for about twelve months from the pour date on the label.
Using it
How long does one tube last?
Daily use, roughly six to eight weeks. Most people find they reach for it less often after the first week, because it is not evaporating off between applications.
Will it melt in a hot car?
It softens above roughly 85°F, the same as any beeswax balm. Stand the tube upright and let it firm back up. Nothing is ruined.
Can kids use it?
Yes. Two ingredients, no fragrance, no flavor to encourage licking. It is also fine on cuticles, knuckles and the dry patch on the bridge of your nose in January.
